AOTA Certification Blog

For an entire year, I've expressed to all that would hear that I was going to be a Certified Hand Therapist. In this month's issue of OT Practice, voluntary professional development is addressed. As I'm moving toward completing my education, I and many fellow students wonder if we should plow forward to add letters at the end of our names. Most of the class want to work in pediatrics. What better way to make money that plopping on the floor and playing with kids? This seems to be the number one reason to go into pediatrics. On the other side of the spectrum, some refuse to go into pediatrics because at this rate, the field will be so saturated that the demand will peter out. What if you were board certified in pediatrics? Will you as an OT be worth more?

AOTA has a blog about board certification and specialty that attracted my attention. I pulled it from the certification section of the AOTA website, and I'm hoping it will help me make an important decision about my own professional development, even before I've completed my education. CHT? Or BC is some other area?

I'm a recruiter who specializes in PT, OT and CHT's. I haven't seen any indication that an OT w/ Peds is "worth more" than a CHT. CHT's are in high demand right now and will continue to be. You can pretty much write your own ticket right now with a sign-on bonus and relocation. Use your CME to further specialize after you've been working for a little while and know what you want.
